6 Natural At-Home Spa Treatments

spa treatmentsVisiting the spa is always a treat. However, for most of us, visiting the spa regularly doesn’t always work for our schedules or our budgets. Luckily, in between spa treatments, you can treat yourself with a regular routine of making your own at-home spa treatments. Dedicating one night a week to an at-home spa treatment will do wonders for your skin and health.

Whether you are at home for a relaxing night in or having the girls over for a little spa party, making and creating your own spa treatments is creative and fun. There’s no need for fancy ingredients or magical potions. Everything you need for a relaxing at-home treatment can be found in your fridge or pantry.

Creating an at-home spa where you can relax and ease your mind involves a few steps but is so worth it. First and foremost, create an environment for yourself where you will be relaxed. Whether that’s in the bath with candles and soothing music, a glass of wine and a good book or watching your favorite television series or movie.

Try these 6 at-home treatments and your skin will thank you.

1. Turn Your Shower into a Steam Room

The warmth and steam of a steam bath is not only relaxing but also opens up your pores. Doing so is one of the first steps towards an at-home spa treatment. Steaming your skin for at least 10 minutes before treating your skin to a facial or body scrub is the best way to achieve maximum benefits for the natural ingredients you will be using.

Run your shower on the hottest temperature for about 10-20 minutes, making sure you close the door to trap in all the steam. While the water is running and the steam is building, take a warm washcloth and mist it with your favorite relaxing oil. A mist of lavender, vanilla or any de-stressing and calming aroma is a great way to relax your body as you being your at-home treatment.

Step into the shower, hold the washcloth up to your face and deeply inhale your calming oil-scented steam and begin relaxing.

2. Make a Hydrating Facial Mask

Blend together some cold cream, yogurt, honey, aloe vera gel and some avocado. Let the mask dry on your skin for about 15-20 minutes for maximum hydration and then rinse. Your skin will feel super refreshed, hydrated and soft.

You can also try a blueberry facial mask by combining ¼ cup blueberries, 1-tablespoon raw honey and 1-tablespoon olive oil. Blend all the ingredients together and apply evenly on your face, being sure to avoid the eye area. Leave the mask on for no more than 10 minutes before removing with warm water and a damp cloth.

This particular mask is great, as blueberries are known as a potent antioxidant that help neutralize free radicals on your skin. Also, blueberries are filled with Vitamins C and E. Blueberries also help normalize the sebum (oil) levels of your skin, keeping your skin feeling smooth, soft and hydrated.

3. Exfoliate With a Sugar Scrub

Mix together: 1 cup brown sugar, 1 cup raw oatmeal and 1 cup olive oil. Apply the scrub to dry skin using your hands or a loofah. Take your time, applying your treatment in gentle, slow, circular motions. Standing over a large plastic bag or a towel is best as some of the sugar particles will fall off in the process. After fully scrubbing your body, step into the shower to rinse off the scrub. You’ll be left with smooth, soft skin that will feel like you spent hours at the spa.

Another scrub that is super nourishing:  1 cup of granulated white sugar and enough Vitamin E oil to make a thick paste. Scrub in circular motions all over your body in the tub. This scrub is especially good for sloughing off dead skin cells and nourishing your skin at the same time.

4. Moisturize Your Skin

Moisturizing your skin is an essential to every skin care routine, especially a spa treatment. The goal of most treatments is to provide you with smooth, soft, healthy looking skin. A well-moisturized skin always looks healthiest.

Mix equal parts honey and olive oil in a jar and leave by your shower. Massage the moisturizing mix onto damp skin as you step out of the shower. Be sure to not overuse as both honey and olive oil are powerful natural ingredients and need to be used in smaller concentrations. It is best to try this moisturizing treatment after a shower before bed. Your skin will feel nourished and soft as you sleep peacefully.

5. Soothe Your Eyes

We tend to forget about our eyes when we do at-home treatments. We spend more time focusing on our head-to-toe skin, hands and feet that the eyes don’t get the treatments they deserve.

The skin around the eyes is very thin and very sensitive, causing immediate flare-ups when we are stress and tired. Fortunately, natural remedies can help treat our poor, puffy eyes.

Try steeping two bags of either chamomile, black or green tea for three minutes in just-boiled water before removing them and placing in the fridge until cooled. Lie on your bed or somewhere relaxing and place the cooled tea bags on each eye and relax for 15 minutes.  The teas have natural anti-inflammatory qualities, reducing redness, puffiness and swelling by helping to constrict the blood vessels around the eye.

A classic remedy for puffy, irritated eyes, are cucumbers which contain ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) that helps reduce swelling.  Cut two ½ inch thick cucumber slices and place in the freezer to chill.  Once cool, place one slice over each eye and lean your head back and relax for 10-15 minutes. A great addition to any one of the at-home facials masks suggested.
